Final media task

When trying to upload this music video, I attempted using different platform to avoid copy right infringements, however, I found that platforms other than youtube were going to charge me to upload this video due to the size of the file.

Evaluation; Question 4-How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Media Technologies in the production.....

To create my music video, I used a wide range of media technologies. For example, our target audience is around the late teen ages- 16 and above and I find the most easiest way to access this age group is through the use of social media. One of the ways I used social media way by creating an instagram account. I used this account to firstly adveertise/ share teasers of the music video to engage in our audience but also to involve our audeince in the creation of the music video itself- asking our followers what they prefered more- the aspect that this helped create was our logo. I also used Facebook messenger to help the creation of our logo because I messaged around 6 different people who I didn't have on instagram- ranging from the ages of 17- 25.

Another way I used media technologies to construct my final music video was by engaging in my audience through the use of online surveys- this meant that I could gather visual statistics including the different view points of people in my class. I also used social media platforms such as facebook messenger to spread the questionnaire links.

Prezi was another media technology which massively came in use across the whole project, from the research straight up to my evaluation. For example, the first tasks set of the research were mainly completed in the format of prezi. This is because I found this a much more interesting way to portray my work. This meant that I could involve visual of each much video which I was analysing- My textual analyses. Another way Prezi was useful across my project was that it helped me present the construction of my music video, this is because I used it as a way of putting my storyboard together, making it even more visual for my audience to observe. Furthermore, I found Prezi useful for presenting all of the release forms of our characters and locations, this is because if I were have juts placed them straight on my blog, I do not think that it would have the same appeal- they were also quite difficult to read as they were smaller juts on my blog. Prezi was another platform in which I decided to create one part of my evaluation, this is because it is an easy platform to display to my audience different aspects involving images and  writing.

Furthermore, I found a varitey of different online websites which helped me construct elements of my music video. For example, my storyboard which I previously mentioned that was presented on Prezi, was actually created online with a website called "Storyboard creator", which is linked within my storyboard blog post. I found this much more successful than juts drawing my storyboard because I though if I were to draw it, as I am not the best artist, parts of the storyboard may not be very clear and need explaining, although I found because I made it digitally, it was much clearer to see what my intentions for my music video were going to be. Furthermore, I used another website called "Logomakr" to help influence my company logo.
Alongside the website, the media technologies of computer programmes also helped the construction of elements of my music video. For example photoshop helped me add text to my logo which I created online. Furthermore, programmes such as Adobe InDesign and Illustrator help the construction of my ancillary tasks of the digipak and magazine advertisement. The use of Youtube was also used in this because I found different videos to help me learn how to complete different techniques, such as the writing around my CD on my digipak design.

Adobe Premier Pro was also important in the construction of my music video. This is because without this media technology, it would have been very difficult of me to make the final media product of my music video.  I created many different test shoots on Premier Pro to firstly get to grips with the programmes it self and also to experiement with different treatments.  Furthermore, Premier Pro was also the programme which I created my final music video on, having different video effects across the programe was very important and successful in my final product, for example adding colour treatment across every frame was the main part of treatment that I used in this music video. This is because it gave a warm tone throughout the music video. When experimenting with the test shoots, I tried different colours to over lay our music video with although at that time, I didn't like any of the colours because I didn't think they work very well. Although when the music video was altogether in "natural light", it didn't look too much like a music video but just a short film which is obiviously not the look that I wanted. Therefore showing how my experimentation across this project massively helped the final production of our music video.

Furthermore, the online platform and media technology of slide share was also useful in the planning of the music video because it enabled me to publish my work from Microsoft word and Microsoft powerpoint onto my blog making it look more professional than having to add screenshots instead. Work that was published using slideshare included the edit log, call sheets, sample scripts and many more to the documents of the planning step of the music video.

Finally, across the production of our music video, I found different apps on my college Ipad to help share work in different formats. Thus showing apple app store as a useful media technology for my music video. For example I made a "moving" storyboard called Animation Desk Cloud and used youtube to upload this onto my blog, however, even though this was a good idea, as already mentioned I am not very artistic, not all of the stages were picked up, also when uploaded to youtube, parts of the video are hard to see as they are much fainter than they appeared on the app- therefore I decided to use the online storyboard maker instead. For my evaluation of I also used the add "Splice- Video Editor + movie maker" as a media technology. This is because I wanted to use a range of different platforms for my final evaluation to display my use of experimentation and that my work is not limited to just a singular platform. I also wanted to make a video on one of my evaluation questions so it is much more interactive than juts reading all of my work.

Evaluation; Question 3-What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Evaluation; Question 2- How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Evaluation; Question 1-In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Audience Feedback

This is a small focus group to give us some feedback on both the music video and the ancillary tasks.
Before we started the filming we showed each respondent the music video so that they were able to form an opinion before we asked them any questions, they had not heard the questions before the filming so their answers are their own and have not been influenced at all.

1. What are your opinions on our music video?
As this is a unstructured interview, we wanted to have very broad worded questions, this is because it would make it much easier for us to gain more qualitative data rather than simple yes no answers. As a whole, the more broad a question can be, at times can mean the more responsive because the respondents aren't lead to say a given answer and may answer in a long statement- giving us more data which is useful.

Respondent A. His response was that he enjoyed it because it appeared to clearly show a students life and was therefore relatable. We can take this answer to suggest that therefore our aims for our music video has been met- we wanted to produce a music video which can be enjoyed, educational and also relatable .

Respondent B. In response to the camera work, respondent B appears to find this part one of the appealing aspect because some of our shots are hand held. When creating our music video, we film some shots on my dlsr camera, giving us control over the focus, making us be able to shoot pull focus shots, although we also filmed shots on our phones, only side the fact that this gave it a "vlog" style effect, this was also because these shots are taken on our shots "out" and we didn't want to use an expensive camera to film as it could break the camera.

Respondent C. Going back to the camera work, this respondent compared the camera work to be similar to the work of a tour dairy which I personally find really interesting because it shows a wider perspective of our audience. As we are aiming this music video of 16+, people can have any viewpoint which is what we want, people to find enjoyment in it for their own reasons.

2. Do you think our music video portrays the theme of drug and alcohol abuse of youths?
Respondent A. This respondent referred to our use of props and conventions. As are theme was based around drugs and alcohol, we knew when planning that we had to ensure these theme ran across the music video and as respondent A has picked up on this it shows that it has work well. Using props such as the pills, smoking and drink shows these themes quite well.

Respondent B. much like respondent A, he states how it does portray the theme of drug and alcohol abuse as it is a running aspect throughout the music and it not just one shot.

Respondent C. Our aim of this music video was a learning curve on the use of alcohol and more importantly drugs, this respondent has picked up on this influence by describing the music video as portraying the theme but also showing it "as something to avoid". The way we managed to do this was to have the exam at the beginning- something that teenagers have to work all year for, but then in the middle to show her fail because she hadn't put any work into it, she didn't care and would rather go out drinking and to gigs instead shows the negatives of this behaviour.

3. Do you think that our music video is a realistic portrayal of modern day youth subcultures?
Respondent A. Again due to the use of media conventions that we used in our props like the drugs and alcohol shows that it is realistic to youths in today's society, respondent A explains this to be because more and more youths are likely to go out rather than stay at home.

Respondent B and Respondent C both go on to explain how there are aspects of the music video which are realistic, however, with the suggestion that it would be an "extreme" subculture. To continue to explain this point, as our aim for this music video was to teach our audience that drugs are bad and they have bad effects on you, we couldn't approach this topic faintly, to teach people, I think there needs to be extreme aspects just to avoid people doing and acting in this behaviour/ manor.

4. Do you think our music video is suitable for our target audience of 16-21 year olds?
Respondent A. Looking at the theme of our music video of drug and alcohol abuse, respondent A explains how this is a suitable video for this age market because if it were to be shown to people younger than 16, they may be more impressionable as it may "shown them a bad image". Personally I can see where this respondent is coming from as we do show the fun side of going out to gigs and drinking and young viewers may see this as a good time. Although the reason behind making it 16 is because this is the age in which people begin to take drugs/ try and impress their friends more so may be lead to take part in these activities.

Respondent B. Picks up on our use of characters. We used characters in our music video who were between the ages of our target audience and therefore that shows the suitability. If we were to have used much older characters the response to our music video may not have been the same as it wouldn't have been as relatable for that age range. Respondent C also regards the same views.

5. Do you think Ferns ancillary tasks link to our main task?
All three respondents Due to the similar use of conventions- I used the same props in my music video than I did in both my digipak cover and magazine ad. This respondent has therefore picked up on these convention linking the works together. This therefore is what I wanted for my work and is the reason I decided to use the same images. I didn't want to take completely different images as then the work may not appear to link as well. Respondent C however furthers his view into looking at the colouring, showing how the works interlink due to the running theme of colouring.

Construction of video

BY FERN DISNEY
This is not more completed final coursework. There are still gaps however I wanted to show my progression throughout this task so I decided to upload the draft to youtube in order to explain and analyse the changes in which I intend to change between now and the final upload...

1st shot change...
00:55-01:01
The first shot I wish to change will be this one. This is because I find this one is still for too long. Therefore I will go back to the original clip and change what part I have decided to use. Therefore the audience aren't left watching the same thing for too long. I will be changing this to a zoom in shot from a long shot of the desk to a close up of the noticeboard.

2nd Shot Change...
03:33-03:46
During the bridge I have a couple of different clips shown in this draft- showing post stick notes on a wall and her tidying her bed up. However, I want to improve the shots in this bridge further. The first way I will do this is but cutting down the length of the post stick shot, this is because even though I think the length works in the speed of the song, I believe because of the handling of my camera, the focus pulls in and out much more than I would prefer. Therefore, I have decided to half this and include other shots which I took on the same day- including a pan of shoes on the floor and mess on the bedroom floor. This way I think it shows the difference that my character is trying to make in her life.

Finally, what you watch the draft linked above, I have actually removed the music for this piece so it isn't restricted by copyright- I will be uploading my final work on another program. There is also a small black bit at the end of the video because it is not complete- this will be filmed tomorrow and edited on monday so the final edit will be completed then.

Production Log

By Fern Disney.
24/11/16: Completion of 500 word plot and annotations.

24/11/16: Completion of Script.

24/11/16: Completion of Location planning and what places we were intending to use. It was until much later on when we actually gained Recce shots in displaying our locations. Thus Allowing us plenty of time before shooting to discover new places in these ideas- for example we want to use a park so this gave us time to look for a good park to use.

5/1/17: Completion of the research for props. Even though this was completed on this date, this was an on going task maximising which props we were going to actually use.

5/1/17: Completion of the Shot List.

8/2/17: First test shoot complete within a taxi, filmed on a phone of people walking in London at night. Even though this was our first test shoot, it enabled us to learn that this style wasn't completely successful and may appear out of place to the rest of the music video.

8/2/17: The second test shoot was taken within a smoking shelter.

7/3/17: Our third test shoot filmed within the exam hall- this is the location which he have continued to decide to use within our work. This shows how the test shoot helped us work out our location because before this we weren't completely sure which room we were going to use and we went in there on a limb just to see what it was like and we ended up liking this location.

10/3/17: Completion of the Location Scouting Sheets, including Megan's house and the exam hall.

10/3/17: Completion of all personal/ talent release forms.

14/3/17: Completion of the editing treatment of our test shoots

14/3/17: Completion of the making of the exam paper props.

17/3/17: First shoot day within the exam hall.

21/3/17: Second shooting day around Megan's house doing filler shots.

23/3/17: Completion of online storyboard using "storyboard creator" and presented within a Prezi

24/3/17: Audio permission completed.

Magazine Layout

For my magazine, I wanted to have a simplistic appeal to it. Only including very little writing so my audience know what the advert is for and that is all.
This advert by Ed Sheeran is my influence of the creation of this magazine. This is because I believe it gets straight to the point and nothing is lost. My reason behind the image that I have chosen is because this is the image I used for my digipak- the whole reason for my advert is for the advertisement of my digipak single, therefore I thought it made sense for the image of the magazine to be the same image- therefore when the digipak would go out into shops, the public would know from this magazine what to look for in the front cover. When I edited this image, I overlaid two images for someone sticking out their tongue revealing a tablet. I think this is relevant and links to my work quite clearly because there are shots very similar to this in my music video and is therefore advertisement for the upcoming music video release. Furthermore, across the whole music video there is a warm orange tone overlaid across all the shots so I thought it worked better if I made my image overlaid with an orange tone- it fits better in my music video.

Digipak Skelton layout

Using Adobe Indesign I created two different skeleton layouts in order to display my ideas for my digipak. I used photos online for this task as I wanted a way to display my intentions. For the first digipak, I decided to do a plain and simple colour pattern- mainly black and white with the contrast of red nails. However, from the results of the digipak, more people favoured the second digipak- including bright colours. I didn't particularly like this image as such but I wanted to include an example- I have decided to use a photo of a mouth but using the conventions within my music video, I decided to include the prop of a pill on the mouth.

Digipak Treatment

This is my final digipak cover which I have decided to use.
The reason I have decided to use this text is because it is very similar to the style of font in which we use within our music video. Furthermore, I find it interesting as it is bold and I think it is eye grabbing which is what I want in a title font.
This is the colour which I used for the font. To get this colour I use the colour pipet on photoshop to use the colour of the lips with the blue crossed with the red which made this colour. I think it works better that I chose the colour of the lips because originally, I was going to use a black font, although I found this look too out of place. Therefore when creating the font for my whole digipak, I used the same style but also the same colour because I didn't want anything to appear odd.
When editing, because I over laid two images to get an almost 3D effect, I found it quite difficult to cut the lips from the skin, so a way I found that worked to back the background as bright as possible was by using the dodge tool, I highlighted all around the lips which resulted in this which I find has worked really well.

These are the layers that created my digipak. As you can see, I mainly edited the background image of the red/orange lips and then overlaid the blue lips then adding a vibrance layer on top of the whole image to flatten it together a bit.

Resultant Digipak Images

These are the two images in which I over laid in order to create my digipak.

Primary research; Digipak results

By Fern Disney
AS spoken about in my first digipak results post, I had an issue with the wording in some of my questions as they didn't end up helping me as much as I needed them to. Therefore, I decided to redo my questionnaire online to gather more data whilst operationalising my questions better. Here are my final results for my digipak questionnaire, I only ended up gaining 11 responses as I found out in my first attempt, the results wipe after a couple of days so this had to be done much quicker than I had hoped for and now means I don't have a representative amount of data for it to be generalise across my whole target audience, however I will use this as a starting point in guiding my digipak work.
Image one
Image two
As I had 11 responses, you can see how the results are only differ through one response, one person made a difference to what one was more in favourable, which suggests to me that both digipaks are very similar in the terms of being eye drawing. I later asked a question to rate my digipaks to see the actual difference on average which people found between them. As my results are very close, it therefore has shown me that there are aspects of both images that I can use, merging them together.

Digipak questionnaire results 1

Take part in our online Survey
Take part in our online Survey

1.  2.

From this question there is a clear result that the main winner of what digipak cover people in my class prefer more it number 2, yet it is a very close call with 1 vote difference, Maybe in time, I can gain more results that can have a greater influence on my work.

Unfortunately, due to a lack of knowledge on the website, I worded the question so I am unable to tell who picked what number and is answering in that way; this sadly means that this question doesn't help me in my final production of a digipak. Therefore, if I am able to, I will create a new survey on the same question to gain more reliable and valid data.

These results here show that the main winner for the colouring would be bold- this can impact me on my final creation of my digipak by making sure I include bolder colours in both the text and photo.

This result is important for my progression in the creation of my digipak because it has shown me that my theme needs to fit the genre of the music.

This was my original questionnaire, however due to technological issues, I was unable to update my response rates, so I decided to create a new questionnaire including improvements on the above questions in order to gain more qualitative data which I have found this survey hasn't gained for my creation of my work.

Props...

Within the exam hall shots at the beginning at in the middle of the music video during the bridge, we used the props of exam papers, this was to help set the location in the establishing scene at the beginning- to show our audience that this was actually a exam. I made the exam papers by finding the front of a previous media exam picture, printing that out and then instead of juts having a single sheet of paper (I found this didn't look very realistic), I sellotaped a joining piece of paper by bending one of the edges to make it appear like a booklet, I found this much more successful in displaying an exam paper.

After the song has started, one of the first shoots we see is of this corkboard with lots of different gig tickets on and polaroids . I find this a really important prop because I believe it fits in with the conventions of a youth music video. This is because it shows our character is massively sociable and goes out a lot. I believe this counts as a convention of a youth music video because if we didn't show props such as this one, it wouldn't appear that our character is going out instead of staying revising and being a "good student".
